The Sunrise City Coconut Collective (SC3) is partnering with SABA San Nicolas to create a functional, accessible sensory and medicinal herb garden. We will design and construct 4 to 6 waist-high raised planters to allow residents including those in wheelchairs to interact with traditional plants without physical strain. The project focuses on "Tea and Aromatics," using local flora that residents have known and used for generations.
Our goal is to create a sensory "Tea Garden" filled with traditional Aruban herbs like Lemongrass, Yerba Holé, Torengiel, and Caribbean Oregano. These planters allow residents, including those in wheelchairs, to touch, smell, and harvest herbs for their own tea, stimulating memory and promoting outdoor activity. We need volunteers who are handy with a drill, love gardening, or simply enjoy sharing a story with our elders. Join us in making the Sunrise City a greener, more inclusive place for our seniors!
Goals & Impact
• Accessibility: Providing a gardening experience that is physically inclusive for the elderly.
• Mental Well-being: Utilizing "Scent & Touch" therapy to stimulate memory and reduce stress.
• Community: Strengthening the bond between SC3 volunteers and the elders of San Nicolas.
Activities
• Day 1 (Aruba Doet): Assembly of the raised bed structures, sanding, and staining to ensure longevity against the elements.
• Day 2 (Aruba Doet): Filling beds with soil, strategic planting of the "Tea Garden" herbs, and a small "handover" social with the residents to share the first scents of the garden
